The month of love and celebration, yet still winter and dark. It is my birthday month, and I am holding onto the fact that spring will come. There is always light after darkness, and as I meditate throughout my Lenten traditions, I look forward to the end of darkness. Rotarians also have a knack for creating hope where there is darkness. That is our focus this year, and I am so proud of the amazing hope you are all bringing to your families, communities, and the world around us. I am hoping you all have had a moment this month to reflect on the great work we are doing throughout the District and throughout the world! I have been thinking about Rotary’s Vision Statement this month:
TOGETHER we see a world where PEOPLE unite and take action to CREATE lasting CHANGE across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Our Strategic Plan reminds us that we want to continue to:
Increase Our Impact. Please reflect upon how you and your club might contribute to the End Polio Now campaign. Perhaps it is a Rotary moment during your meeting. Perhaps encouraging every Rotarian every year for even a small amount. Are you thinking about the 7 Areas of Focus at some point in your meetings? Why not become a Rotary Promise Club? This is a club recognition achieved when 100% of active members contribute US$1,000 or more to the Rotary Foundation’s Endowment. Visit Growing the Endowment Planned giving | Rotary International for more information.
Expand Our Reach. Is your club growing? Have you given some thought to a companion club doing a focused project in the community or meeting at a different time to allow more members access to Rotary? Are you letting the community know what your club is doing?
Enhance Participant Engagement. The Learning Center at Rotary.org is an amazing wealth of Rotary ideas and tools. A member might share something they learned on the site. RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute) is virtual in both February (27 & 29) and March (19 & 21). They are evening meetings from 6-8 PM. You can find out about RLI at https://www.rlinea.org/
I have been teaching small group conversations during my visits. Have you been able to do more of this? (check out www.peterblock.com) We are also holding regional trainings. Please check with your Assistant Governor to find out more about these. Also, on the website, you can register for the Foundation trainings.
Increase our Ability to Adapt. We have clubs with co-presidents. The governance model needs to fit the needs of your clubs. Do you need a meal? Could a service project replace a meeting once a month? Ask your members and your community what would keep people engaged with Rotary.

Are you aware of the Peace Fellowships?
Please help the committee find qualified candidates. Applications are open until May 15, 2024. The Rotary Foundation is awarding 50 fellowships this year for a master’s degree, and up to 80 fellowships for professional development certificates. See Peace Fellowships | Rotary International for more information. A candidate must have a strong commitment to cross-cultural understanding and must have at least 3 years between the completion of their most recent academic degree program. They cannot be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program to qualify. You can find out more also at our District Conference. There is a new Peace Center in Istanbul, Turkey. This focuses on peace building within the Middle East and North Africa.

Please know that I will never ask you for a gift card. Rotarians have been getting false emails saying they were from me. Please check the email address. It is phony. I communicated with one of these scammers and told him to stop immediately. He said, give me $1000 and I’ll stop. I encouraged him to seek help elsewhere, and he stopped writing to me. Rotarians don’t do anything in secret, and certainly don’t ask for gift cards for any reason. Please be alert!

Stephanie Urchick is a member of the Rotary Club of McMurray, Pennsylvania, USA. She will serve RI as president in 2024-25. She has been an RI director and Rotary Foundation trustee. She has served RI in numerous capacities, including as training leader, regional Rotary Foundation coordinator, and RI president’s representative. In addition, Stephanie was a representative and member-at-large to three sessions of the Council on Legislation. Stephanie has also served as chair of the Rotary Strategic Planning Committee and The Rotary Foundation’s Centennial Celebration Committee, as well as a member of various Rotary committees, including the Election Review Committee and Operational Review Committee. A Rotary member since 1991, Stephanie has participated in a variety of international service projects, including National Immunization Days in India and Nigeria. In Vietnam, she worked with clubs to help build a primary school and travelled to the Dominican Republic to install water filters. A student of several Slavic languages, she has mentored new Rotary members in Ukraine and coordinated a Rotary Foundation grant for a mammography equipment and a biopsy unit for a hospital in Poland. In its commemorative book, the Rotary Club of Krakow, Poland, noted Stephanie as a key figure for helping the re-birth of Rotary in post-Communist Poland. Currently, Stephanie is helping to partner clubs and districts in the U.S. with Rotary clubs in Albania, Kosovo, and Ukraine for humanitarian and educational services. Stephanie’s professional background is in the higher education, consulting, and entertainment industries. She received her doctorate degree in Leadership Studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and has been recognized and awarded by The Rotary Foundation and numerous community and international organizations.

The Lincoln-Woodstock Rotary Club sponsors a very active Interact Club. Thanks to their advisor, Doug Morehead, here are some of the projects they have been seen doing:
Trail maintenance on the Discovery Trail in the White Mountain National Forest.
They could also be found at the Celebration of Lights, collecting non-perishable toiletries for needy families, delivering meals and caroling around Lincoln-Woodstock, and participating in the Woodstock Winter Festival Float.
Here is an award they were given as Volunteer Champ-ions by the Spirit of NH.
Interact Club members become Rotarians. Youth Exchange participants become Rotarians. Speech Contest participants, RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) participants all have experiences with Rotarians. Relationships foster good mental health – which promotes more working together – and lasting change – just like our vision statement says!

We have Shelter Box Heros in our midst! Congratulations to the North Conway Rotary Club for their 2023-2024 recognition. At the end of this year, all HERO clubs will be listed at www.shelterboxusa.org/hero. Over 325,000 people were supported through Shelter Box in 2023. Turkey, Syria, Morocco when earthquakes struck and East Africa through the drought are just some of the places where Shelter Box stepped in. District Conference - April 19-21
Lake Morey Resort, Fairlee VT
Veuillez vous inscrire dès maintenant à la conférence de district. Nous serons au Lake Morey Resort à Fairlee, Vermont, le week-end du 19 au 21 avril 2024. Le vendredi soir n'est qu'une soirée de rassemblement et de plaisir. Il n’y a rien de prévu sauf rencontre et salutation. Le samedi commence par un petit-déjeuner et une réunion d'affaires. Nous organisons ensuite des séances pour le service à la jeunesse, les adhésions et les centres de paix. Ces groupes de discussion se répètent afin que vous puissiez en choisir 2. Notre invitée spéciale du Rotary International est Carol Tichelman, conseillère en dotations/dons majeurs pour la zone 28, et a été gouverneure de district du district 5050 au Canada en 2020-2021. Elle prendra la parole samedi au petit-déjeuner et au dîner. Notre autre invitée spéciale est Eileen Rau du Rotary Club de West Hartford. Elle a été gouverneur de district 2012-2013 et coordinatrice régionale de la Fondation Rotary pour la zone 32. Les clubs seront reconnus et le gagnant du Governor’s Bowl annoncé ! Il y aura discussion et adoption des états financiers vérifiés de l’année dernière pour l’année du PDG Caroline Earle.
Le vote à la conférence de district pour le DGND se fera par les électeurs. Chaque club doit sélectionner et certifier au moins un électeur à sa conférence. Un club de plus de 25 membres dispose d'un électeur supplémentaire pour chaque groupe de 25 membres supplémentaires. Un club comptant jusqu'à 37 membres obtient un électeur. Un club de 38 à 62 obtient 2 électeurs. 63 à 87 membres obtiennent 3 électeurs, et ainsi de suite. Les électeurs doivent être présents à la conférence pour voter. Tous les Rotariens présents peuvent voter sur les statuts et l'approbation des états financiers. Les présidents de club recevront les informations sur les électeurs par courrier électronique.

Please register now for the District Conference. We will be at the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, VT the weekend of April 19-21, 2024. Friday night is just a gathering, fun night. There is nothing planned except meeting and greeting. Saturday starts with breakfast and a business meeting. We then break into sessions for youth service, membership, and peace centers. These break out groups repeat so you can pick 2.
Our special Rotary International guest is Carol Tichelman, Endowment/Major Gift Advisor for Zone 28, and was the District Governor for District 5050 in Canada 2020-2021. She will be speaking at breakfast and dinner on Saturday. Our other special guest is Eileen Rau from the Rotary Club of West Hartford. She was District Governor 2012-2013 and is the Rotary Regional Foundation Coordinator for Zone 32. She will be our Peace Center presenter during our break outs and throughout the conference. Our Youth Exchange students and our Interact students will share their stories. The theme of the weekend is, “Look how we are Creating Hope in the World!” Please bring artifacts from your International Projects and travels! Let’s share how we are creating hope together!
If you have been to Lake Morey, you know the food is amazing, and the water – well…I love the water!! Sunday we will have a Memorial Service to honor those who passed away this past year. As I have been going from club to club, I am meeting our Rotary Family. I want you to all have the same wonderful experience of meeting the other family members. Now I sound like a grandma! I want my family to get together! Please plan to attend – at least on Saturday. There are many options and packages. You can register on the website and call the Resort to reserve your room.
During the business meeting, we will take some important votes. Our DGND Ariel Mondlak will be officially voted in to be District Governor 2026-2027. We have new By-Laws which we are presenting. The summary and the proposed By-Laws will be sent to each Rotarian following this newsletter. According to RI, “The purpose of the district conference is to bring together members and community leaders in the district to inspire greater involvement with Rotary, strengthen existing relationships, and to showcase the impact and outreach of Rotary in the world.” Clubs will be recognized, and the Governor’s Bowl winner announced! There will be discussion and adoption of last year’s audited financial statement for PDG Caroline Earle’s year.
Voting at the District Conference for the DGND shall be by electors. Each club shall select and certify at least one elector to its conference. A club with more than 25 members has one additional elector for each additional 25 members. A club with up to 37 members gets one elector. A club with 38 to 62 gets 2 electors. 63-87 members get 3 electors, and so on. Electors must be present at the conference to vote. All Rotarians present may vote on By-laws and the approval of the financial statement. Club presidents will get the elector information by email.

A Rotary member since 1991, Stephanie has participated in a variety of international service projects, including National Immunization Days in India and Nigeria. In Vietnam, she worked with clubs to help build a primary school and travelled to the Dominican Republic to install water filters. A student of several Slavic languages, she has mentored new Rotary members in Ukraine and coordinated a Rotary Foundation grant for a mammography equipment and a biopsy unit for a hospital in Poland. In its commemorative book, the Rotary Club of Krakow, Poland, noted Stephanie as a key figure for helping the re-birth of Rotary in post-Communist Poland. Currently, Stephanie is helping to partner clubs and districts in the U.S. with Rotary clubs in Albania, Kosovo, and Ukraine for humanitarian and educational services. Stephanie’s professional background is in the higher education, consulting, and entertainment industries. She received her doctorate degree in Leadership Studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and has been recognized and awarded by The Rotary Foundation and numerous community and international organizations.
