DG Susan Cherry and her husband Martin Cherry
July 2023
From the Governor’s Desk / Du bureau du Gouverneur

May I introduce myself? I am your new District Governor, and this is my wonderful husband, Martin. He will be accompanying me on most of my club visits this year. This picture was taken at our International Conference in Orlando, FL. It was in Orlando that I met all my District Governor classmates from around the world. What an experience! Besides, Florida in January is not hard to handle!

On the right is a picture of the tall ship The One and All. Martin and I enjoyed a cruise during the International Convention in Melbourne, Australia. This ship is a Rotary-funded training ship for teens needing extra support during their adulting years. The Convention at the end of May was amazing, with great training, fellowship, and inspiration for the coming year.

June to July was a time of change – and I hope our new Rotary year has you planning some amazing and fun service projects in your clubs. Here are a
few pictures of some of the transitions and celebrations I have been able to attend.

Puis-je me présenter?

Amid all these amazing things that are happening around our District, the most pressing recently has been the response to the devastating floods we have experienced throughout our District and District 7870 below us. I have received an enormous and amazing amount of support and offers of help from around our Rotary World. Some of the local clubs have stepped up and joined the recovery operations within their own areas. I encourage each area to think together of the projects that you might do joining your clubs together. Assistant Governors will help you with that conversation. Meanwhile, I am working with 7870 to create a Disaster Response Grant. As soon as we have the specifics, I will let you all know. The type of response after the tropical storm Irene helped with things that FEMA and the Small Business Administration are not able to do such as water systems and culverts. If your club would like to work more immediately, here are some of the offers I have received:

  • Charlie Magill, AG from the Williston-Richmond Club (cmagillvt@aol.com) is the Disaster Relief Coordinator for the VT Dist. Of the United Methodist Church. They are planning to assemble Cleaning Kits. Please check out this website and let them know if you need kits. . https://umcmission.org/umcor-cleaning-kit/

  • Liz Ganache from the St. Albans Club (liz@lizgamache.com) works for United Way. She has resources that also cover the state of Vermont.

  • FEMA is offering individual assistance to residents of Chittenden, Lamoille, Rutland, Washington, Windham, Windsor, Caledonia, and Orange counties. The deadline to register is Sept. 12. If you have flood insurance, file that claim before registering with FEMA. They will not duplicate benefits. Most homeowner insurance policies don’t cover floods, but VT Legal Aid wants to encourage people to file claims anyway so that FEMA sees what is covered and what is not covered.

  • Clubs may offer their services at volunteer@vermont.gov

Please stay tuned for more information.

Rotary International President is introducing this year’s theme to the District Governors. We are so excited about this theme and the initiatives that accompany it. There is a Mental Health Initiatives Rotary Action Group that can help your club with resources to:

  • Break stigma

  • Raise awareness of mental health issues

  • And increase access capacity for earlier treatment and prevention. If you would like a copy of their slide presentation, you can find it here: https://www.ragonmentalhealth.org/docs.ashx?id=1156106

  • World Mental Health Day is Oct 10. It would be wonderful to collaborate with your local mental health providers to see what they need.

  • More information can be found at: RAGonMentalHealth.org

I will end with a proud Mom moment. I was so thrilled to have my son and daughter join us at NE PETS (Northeast President Elect Training Seminar) in Newton, MA last March. Peter is on the drums and Liz on the bagpipes. May I encourage you to have fun, support each other, your communities and together we can Create Hope in the World. As our RI President said recently:

“Let us build peace within and spread it freely. Let us create belonging and imagine the future of Rotary afresh. Let us work together joyously as we Create Hope in the World.” R. Gordon R. McInally

» R. Gordon R. McInally
