On World Polio Day, October 24th, I had the honor of gathering with Morrisville Rotarians in Stowe, VT, at the March of Dimes Monument “remembering those afflicted with polio, and those who cared for the afflicted and the success of the polio vaccine.” The first cases of polio in the United States were recorded in the Otter Creek Valley in 1894. Severe paralysis developed in 110 cases, and 10 people died. In 1914 there was a major outbreak of this viral disease in New York City, infecting 9,000 people. When another outbreak occurred in 1921, taking the lives of 2,000 New Yorkers, polio presented an urgent challenge to medical science.
À l’occasion de la Journée mondiale de la poliomyélite, le 24 octobre, j’ai eu l’honneur de me réunir avec des Rotariens de Morrisville à Stowe, au VT, à l’occasion de la MARCH OF DIME MONUMENTS « en souvenir de ceux qui ont été atteints de poliomyélite et de ceux qui ont pris soin des personnes affligées et du succès du vaccin antipoliomyélitique ». Les premiers cas de poliomyélite aux États-Unis ont été enregistrés dans la vallée d’Otter Creek en 1894. La paralysie grave s’est développée dans 110 cas, et 10 personnes sont mortes. En 1914, il y a eu une épidémie majeure de cette maladie virale à New York, infectant 9 000 personnes. When I (DG Mike) read about Lebanon Rotary Club’s river clean-up project in their newsletter, I thought it was a wonderful example of living into our 7th Area of Focus, The Environment, and our 2nd Priority in Rotary’s Action Plan, Expanding our Reach, as they collaborated with others to get the job done.

I (DG Mike) can think of no better way to celebrate the work of our Rotary Foundation than to highlight the Foundation’s support of a project by one of our clubs. It is an example of how our donating comes right back to help our clubs Serve to Change Lives.
It seems to be true that almost every project begins with relationships. In this case, between Vergennes Rotarians and the local community of migrant workers.
